Celebrate Valentine's Day 2025

With February in full swing, many people are looking forward to a very special day. Of course, the 14th is Valentine’s Day. The annual celebration of love isn’t just for young couples. It’s a beautiful opportunity to celebrate love in all its forms. Lifelong partners, family members, friends and even caregivers and their clients can celebrate the day in their own special ways. Seniors can certainly enjoy Valentine’s Day celebrations. You’re never too old to celebrate love!

Reminisce over old photos.

For many older adults, taking a trip down memory lane can be a wonderful way to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Grab the old photo albums, re-read love letters or listen to songs that bring back special memories. These are all excellent ways to cherish the annual celebration of love. If your elderly loved one is living with dementia or Alzheimer’s, familiar music and photos can be a comforting and meaningful way to engage them.

As Deborah Stone of Psychology Today points out, family photographs are commonly used when people develop dementia. “Relatives and caregivers will often use them to help someone remember past events or people that were important to them,” she writes, “Old street scenes or photographs of local landmarks are used by many care homes. This type of picture can be very effective in creating a talking point between those with earlier stage dementia.”

Get creative with Valentine’s Day crafts.

Keeping older adults active is a great way to keep them both physically and mentally strong. Why not engage your loved ones with some arts and crafts activities? They can be a fun and therapeutic way to celebrate the special occasion. Try making homemade Valentine’s cards, decorating cookies or arranging a simple bouquet of flowers. These are also great activities to do with grandkids!

“Buy some pink and red construction paper, either online or at your local craft store,” suggests Toronto Mike, “Find some craft glitter, markers, white paper doilies, and ribbons. Get out the scissors and glue sticks, and make some beautiful cards for your friends and family! Your loved one will appreciate the thoughtful gesture.”

Treat your loved one to some indulgences.

Encourage the older adult in your life to enjoy a warm bath, read a good book or even indulge in a favourite dessert. Everyone deserves a little treat. Taking some time to rest and relax can be just what the doctor ordered. Make it a point to offer your loved ones a heartfelt “thank you” as well. A show of gratitude and appreciation is always a nice gesture. Also, if they receive care at home, Valentine’s Day provides you with a great opportunity to thank their caregivers. A simple card or a small gift would be a nice thought.
