Senior Homecare by Angels 2026 New Years Resolution

On behalf of the entire team at Senior Homecare by Angels, we would like to wish you all a very happy, safe and healthy new year! Here’s hoping that 2026 is your most joyous year to date. Now that the calendar has changed, it’s a great time for caregivers and older adults to set a few practical New Year’s resolutions. We’re thinking they should focus less on unrealistic goals and more on everyday safety, comfort and peace of mind.

Here are five New Year’s resolutions that put safety first for seniors and caregivers:

1. Turn your home into a safer sanctuary.

One of the most impactful resolutions for 2026 is making the home as safe as possible. As Healthy Aging CORE makes clear, “falls are the leading cause of injury among older Canadians with 20-30% of seniors experiencing one or more falls each year. Falls cause 85% of seniors’ injury-related hospitalizations, 95% of all hip fractures…and over one third of seniors are admitted to long-term care following hospitalization for a fall.”

Simple updates like removing loose rugs, adding non-slip mats, installing grab bars in bathrooms, improving lighting and clearing clutter from walkways can dramatically reduce fall risks. For caregivers, resolving to do seasonal safety checks, especially during icy Calgary winters, can help catch hazards before they become emergencies.

2. Prioritize gentle, regular movement.

Staying active helps maintain balance, flexibility and muscle strength. These are all keys to preventing falls. This doesn’t mean intense workouts. We’re talking about short daily walks, chair exercises or light stretching. Caregivers can turn this into a shared activity, making movement both safer and more enjoyable.

3. Make medication management a top priority.

Older adults should resolve to keep an updated list of all medications, including dosages and schedules. Caregivers can support this by setting reminders, using pill organizers and watching for side effects.

Depending on the number of medications and dosage types, it might be worthwhile to create a medication list to stay organized. Seniors should write down their medication names, dosages and times to administer them. As well, they should note the purposes of the medicines and their prescribing doctors. Be sure to update this document regularly and bring it to every doctor appointment.

4. Strengthen your social connections.

Safety isn’t just physical. It’s emotional and social too. A valuable 2026 resolution is to stay connected and communicate openly. Regular check-ins help caregivers notice changes in mood, memory or physical ability early on. For older adults, resolving to speak up about discomfort, confusion or concerns can prevent small issues from becoming serious problems. Staying socially connected also reduces loneliness, which has been linked to increased health risks.

5. Consider professional home care.
